Winchester In A Day

The town of Winchester, England is a small one indeed and definitely doesn’t typically top the list for tourist destinations among young travelers. Actually, if it wasn’t for the fact that one of my very best friends is studying abroad at the University of Winchester this semester I doubt I would have even crossed the name of this quaint English spot on a map. Although, luckily I did.

Many big cities in England have unique flares to them and very different cultures but when you think of the stereotypical “England” this is what you see. If you’re looking for a true British experience with authentic people, dining, architecture and the whole bit take a visit to Winchester! Now since it isn’t terribly massive it is easy to get the jist of it in a day trip if you need to. There is a train station in the center of town that connects to larger stations all over the UK making it very easy to access. Once you’re there here are my top 3 points to hit:

1. St. Catherine’s Hill

As I’ve discussed many a time in my posts, when in a city you absolutely have to seek out the best view. While St. Catherine’s hill is a bit of hike, and when I say hike I mean real, trudging up a dirt path, it is well worth it! So, you’ll want to wear comfortable hiking shoes but I suggest you also bring a book and a picnic too because the view from the crest of the hill is magnificent and well worth the afternoon adventure.

2. Butter Cross

This is the historic center piece of Winchester. The statue pictured below is famous and also, more importantly located right in the middle of some of the towns best shopping and dining. The local shops are adorable, everything from your men’s vintage clothing store to your large Primark, there is plenty to do. Also there are a number of great places to get dinner and drinks in this area! O’neills is an Irish inspired pub with great food and drink or you have Alfie’s for great coffee during the day and a beer garden/cocktails for late night entertainment.

3. The University of Winchester

The university is a really interesting place. Home to about 4000 students from all over the world this an epicenter of youth and a lovely mixture of modern education and historical local charm. The walk from downtown to the University will also bring you across the Winchester Cathedral and an amazing grave yard with a view. P.S. up the hill above the University is a great bar called the County Arms generally populated with students that has an awesome Karaoke night on Sunday’s.

So there you have it folks there are endless other things I could advise you to do (see list below) but the best way to see Winchester is just to meander through it. Take a bike tour down the river or go hiking around town, the scenery around this place is like no other.  I assure you that you won’t regret indulging in this off the beaten path English travel destination.
