5 Ways To Work Away

During graduation season exciting job announcements flood my social media timelines left and right. Naturally I began to brainstorm ways I could combine my degree, my need to stay economically stable (aka not homeless) and to travel the world.

Believe it or not, working abroad is possible. While some of these may not be permanent solutions they are all worth a shot, especially after college! What better time is there to explore then right after school? You have nothing tying you down so try something new and if it doesn’t work out, try again. But hey there is always a chance that that temporary travel job could lead to new and exciting opportunities too. So without further a dew below is a list of the top 5 things the wanderluster without a bottomless bank account should look into if wanting to work and travel!

1 .Become a Tour Guide

If you’re outgoing and friendly, this is perhaps one of the best love-your-job’s in the world. Imagine living in a foreign country showing travellers who, like you love to travel, around your new home. As long as you love to chat and are passionate about the new country or city in which you live, you’re bound to love the job of a tour guide.

For example an alumni of High Point University worked for about a year in Florence, Italy (where she studied abroad) after graduation and had the time of her life. The organization she worked for was called FlorenceForFun but there are many travel agency and tour guide companies all over the world that combine work, play and travel all in one.

2. Flight Attendant

This would have to be one of the most obvious jobs for people who love to travel, but its also one of the most attainable and enjoyable. Imagine jet setting around the world, staying a night or two in foreign cities, only to wake up and do it all again. You’ll have to love people but as far as qualifications go, most airlines will only expect prior experience in customer service and certification. It is crazy hours and a crazy lifestyle, its not as easy as it looks but the decent salary and the destinations can make it all worth while.P.S. remember the heavily discounted flights you’ll be able to get for you and your family. 3. WWOOF

If you’re an explorer who likes the idea of giving back, WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) is perhaps your answer! WWOOF offers travellers a chance to travel in an ethical way that will also involve payment.

My friends have done experiences with their significant others both in puerto Rico and Hawaii and didn’t want to leave. These work-away experiences are a great way to meet some of the nicest people and help someone else out all in trade for a great visit to a beautiful place and a place to rest your head at night.

4. Work as an Au Pair

If you love children, this is the perfect gig for you. It’s a bonus if you speak a second language or want to develop your skills in a second language. As an Au pair you’ll live with a host family in a foreign country, look after the children, and receive a small salary for your efforts. It’s a great way to experience life in a different country, however your free time will be extremely limited and keep in mind the family you work for can make or break your experience so make sure when you interview, you also interview them as well. Once again I have a friend who has done this in Paris and very much enjoyed but mentioned that she was very busy!

5. Bartending or anything else for that matter…

Lets get back to basics – one of the most popular jobs for travellers is pretty easy to come by. So long as you have the working visas required, you are almost guaranteed to find a job in a bar somewhere. Leaving home with previous experience will of course help but is by no means necessary! And remember any skill that you have like maybe yoga, skiing, dance lessons, art or photography these skills or instructor jobs can be transported anywhere. Get a skill, own it and take it on the road!

These are my top suggestions to get out there and get going and to try to sustain yourself along the way. Just remember there are seven days of the week and someday is not one of them, so if it is a dream of yours, just do it!Work Away Travel Wanderlust College Student
